Pop singer Ava Max is heating up Independence Day with the release of her latest single, “Wet, Hot American Dream,” a cheeky, retro-inspired track pulled from her upcoming album “Don’t Click Play.” The new song arrived just in time for the summer holiday and offers fans a flirty, tongue-in-cheek anthem soaked in ’80s synths and playful patriotism.

While “Wet, Hot American Dream” has its charms, not everyone is convinced it’s Ava’s strongest work. The production, while catchy, lacks the polish of her previous hits like “Sweet but Psycho” and “Kings & Queens.” Critics have called the lyrics overly cheesy and underdeveloped, suggesting the track might have benefited from more lyrical finesse.

The accompanying visualizer finds Ava standing confidently in front of a giant American flag, donning a bright red bikini and matching red boots, a look that channels both old-school pin-up and modern-day pop glam. However, the video overall feels a bit low-budget and underwhelming.

Despite the critiques, Ava Max remains a pop force who knows how to own a moment. And while Wet, Hot American Dream” may not be her most powerful release, it’s clearly intended as a campy, fun celebration of summer and Americana rather than a deeply serious pop statement.

Ava will also perform the track during the 49th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks special, airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock.
