JQ of Nulbarich, who will be taking a hiatus at the end of 2024, has made his mark as a producer with 18-year-old singer REJAY. Her debut single, “Too Late,” released in February, garnered significant attention, making its way onto several Spotify editorial playlists. In July, REJAY also made waves by performing at “J-WAVE presents INSPIRE TOKYO 2024 -Best Music & Market-,” marking her debut live performance.

Hailing from Niseko, Hokkaido, REJAY’s diverse musical influences come from her Australian father and a varied childhood soundtrack. She began writing her own melodies and lyrics at 13, and a YouTube video of her singing caught the eye of JQ from Nulbarich. After moving to Tokyo, she launched her career under JQ’s production, showcasing a distinctive voice that blends shadow and transparency.

Her latest track, “Meant To Be,” features engaging guitar textures and explores the theme of breakups. The music video, directed by Raita Kuramoto—renowned for his work with My Hair is Bad, Sexy Zone, and various films—ties in with his recent short film “Little by Little.” In the film, REJAY plays Emma, a singer-songwriter who parts ways with her photographer boyfriend, Chris, as he departs for a long-term overseas assignment. The music video, set months after their breakup, depicts Emma adapting to her new life in a different city.

“Meant To Be” highlights REJAY’s ability to merge dreamy melodies with a poignant narrative. The song’s indie pop vibe is enriched by layered distorted guitars, adding depth and immersion to the track. While REJAY’s vocals are soothing and smooth, a touch more clarity in her enunciation could further enhance her compelling performance.
