CHIA is encapsulating the essence of self-discovery and emotional vulnerability in her new single, “Envious.”

Meet CHIA, a versatile artist from Canada who juggles multiple creative endeavors. Alongside writing and performing music, she is also crafting her own graphic novel. Her latest single, “Envious,” represents a significant milestone in her evolving musical journey.

Formerly known as Christina Pasion, CHIA’s transformation into this new persona signifies a bold reinvention, enabling her to explore and express her authentic artistic self. In this exclusive interview, CHIA shares insights into her artistic evolution, the inspiration behind “Envious,” and what’s next on her dynamic path.

Singular Culture: How long have you been creating music, and what inspired you to start your journey as a music artist?

CHIA: I was born into a creative and musical family. My mom was a natural singer and dancer, while my father worked as a photographer and DJ, so my environment was filled with various genres of music.

I wrote my first “song” when I was about eight years old. My parents divorced when I was four, and I spent a lot of time moving between different households, cities, and schools. I was always a curious and rebellious kid.

Music became my refuge and a means of self-expression. The experiences I went through felt very different from what other kids were experiencing, and writing and singing my favorite bands’ music alone in my bedroom was the catalyst for my passion.

Are there any particular artists who have inspired your music and influenced your creative process?

I love many different artists for various reasons. When I think of a strong writer and a pop idol who is unapologetically herself while constantly pushing her boundaries, I think of Halsey. I see much of myself in her and really admire her creativity. Lana Del Rey is also a major influence for similar reasons. I am also a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead; I am in constant awe of the musicianship, unity, and timelessness they bring to the world.

Having released music previously under the name Christina Pasion, what has been the most challenging aspect of redefining yourself as CHIA, and how have you navigated that transformation?

Stepping into my alter-ego as CHIA has been a great decision for me. It has allowed me to break free from the limiting beliefs I held about myself as Christina Pasion. This new persona has become a stage where I feel less judgmental of myself and more open in expressing what I want to write about.

The most challenging aspect has been staying true to the overall vision I have for the project. It’s important to remind myself that all great things take time. During the development stages, not everyone will understand or appreciate it right away, and that’s completely okay.

“Envious” explores intense emotions and personal struggles. Are there specific moments or experiences that particularly influenced the lyrics and overall mood of the song?

“Envious” dives into the struggle of trying to fully commit to someone while questioning whether your doubts are based on real concerns or just old insecurities from past hurts. The line “I’m still learning to love myself” captures a universal experience—how relationships can really test our self-love at times.

Can you share any memorable moments or challenges you faced while working on “Envious”?

As a writer, I find it amusing that I can create a song in just 10-15 minutes and then move on, often forgetting about it. I had sent a few demos to my engineer, and something about this particular song stood out to him. I remember thinking, “Oh, that song!” The relatable emotion of feeling envious seemed to capture his interest. I’m glad we decided to work on it; it was a funny moment in the studio.

We loved the laid back yet catchy guitar intro. How did you approach the production and arrangement of “Envious”?

I have to give credit to the original producer, Mathew May, whom I discovered on YouTube. I fell in love with the guitar and wrote a topline. Then, my engineer and I decided to pitch it down and experiment with the beat a bit, and that’s how the final product came together.

You’ve mentioned struggling with mental health. What role does music play in helping you process and cope with your emotions? Has it  become a therapeutic outlet for you?

As cliché as it may sound, I honestly don’t know if I’d still be here today without music. It has helped me through the toughest times in my life.

As a writer, music has made me more self-aware and conscious of my experiences with people, places, and things. When I’m feeling an unpleasant emotion, writing a song about it often feels like a form of healing. It allows me to gain a new perspective and make sense of the situation.

We noticed you’re writing a graphic novel alongside your music. How do you manage to stay organized and focused while balancing these different projects?

It is not easy! Time management is key. I use a whiteboard to keep track of everything and stay disciplined with my schedule. However, I also remind myself to be kind if I miss a deadline or skip a day. Living in such a content-driven era can be challenging.

I’ve really learned and continue to learn that it’s all about the journey and living in the present. I truly believe in the power of manifestation combined with active work. When I feel overwhelmed, I take time to meditate and recenter myself.

What can listeners expect from you in the near future? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about?

I will be releasing a song each month and hope to have an EP by the end of the year, collaborating with various producers from LA and Toronto. Listeners can also look forward to more live looping sessions, plant-derived music, guided meditations, and the release of “Finding Chia,” my graphic novel.
