JEON SOMI recently made a comeback with her new summer single, “Ice Cream.” This marks her first release since “Fast Forward” last year, following her 2023 mini-album Game Plan. Before that, she made waves with her debut studio album XOXO in October 2021.

In a bit of a surprise, “Ice Cream” is presented as an English track, although it’s not Somi’s first foray into English-language music—her debut album XOXO included the B-side “Anyone.” The single is designed to be playful and flirtatious, using the metaphor of ice cream to explore themes of sweetness and temptation in a relationship. Somi likens herself to ice cream: alluring and enjoyable, yet vulnerable to the fluctuations of love.

Upon first listen, “Ice Cream” seemed a bit underwhelming. The initial reaction was one of disappointment, but with repeated plays, the track began to warm up. Despite this, it may not become a favorite or a go-to song for many. The track features consistent rhythmic percussion, crunchy brass, and a singular vocal approach from Somi that some might find one-dimensional.

The song has a distinct Meghan Trainor vibe. While the first verse offers a catchy groove, evident in the beats and horn sections, the song as a whole lacks a standout hook or dynamic shifts, making it feel somewhat flat and repetitive. Although the music video is charming and showcases Somi’s undeniable beauty, the song itself doesn’t seem to evolve much, leaving some listeners feeling that it lacks depth and emotional engagement.

Overall, while “Ice Cream” delivers a sweet and fun summer vibe, it may not resonate with everyone. The consistent production and repetitive elements could be seen as both its strength and its limitation, making it a pleasant listen but perhaps not a standout hit.
