Jeon Somi has returned and she’s unapologetically E-X-T-R-A. Her new single “EXTRA” is loud, bold, fun, and completely over the top in the best way. From the eye-popping visuals to the ridiculously catchy hook, this release feels like a confident step forward for Somi. It shows how much she’s grown while still holding on to the playful charm that made her stand out in the first place.
The song itself is pure pop fun. With a retro beat and a chorus that spells out E-X-T-R-A, it’s instantly memorable. That kind of spelling hook has been used before, like in Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” or Fergie’s “Glamorous,” and it works just as well here. It’s simple, a little cheeky, and super effective. It’s the kind of chorus that’s easy to sing along to and hard to forget.
Compared to earlier releases like “Ice Cream,” this one feels much more polished. The production is slick, the vocals sound more confident, and everything just clicks. You can tell Somi is enjoying herself, but she’s also in control. She knows what kind of sound she’s going for, and she’s not afraid to play with it.
Still, if there’s one drawback, it’s the length. At just around two and a half minutes, the song ends just as it feels like it’s building momentum. A bridge or a small twist could have taken it to the next level. That short runtime is part of a wider trend in pop right now, where songs are being cut down for streaming, but it does make you wish there was a little more to hold onto.
What stands out most is how free Somi seems. She doesn’t follow the typical K-pop schedule. She releases music when she wants to, and it really feels like she’s the one calling the shots. There’s something refreshing about an artist who isn’t trying to please everyone and is instead focused on making music that feels right to her.
“EXTRA” might not be revolutionary, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s catchy, stylish, and full of personality. It’s a great reminder of why Somi continues to be one of the most exciting solo acts in the scene.
Check out the music video if you haven’t. It brings the song to life in a way that’s both striking and unexpected.
