Indie pop singer-songwriter mxmtoon has officially released her third studio album, “liminal space”, via AWAL. The album has been met with excitement from both fans and critics alike, with the release marked by the debut of the single “Passenger Side”, a standout track that encapsulates the emotive and introspective nature of the album. In addition, mxmtoon has unveiled a 27-date headlining North American tour, slated to kick off in February 2024, bringing her new music to fans across the continent.

The lead single, “Passenger Side”, is a chill indie pop track centered around a subtle but captivating instrumental arrangement. The focal instruments are electric guitar and drums, which lay a steady foundation for the song. Complementing these are the ethereal, bell-like synths that add a layer of magic and texture to the sound.

“liminal space” is more than just an album—it’s a journey through the uncertainties and emotional landscapes of life. In the release, mxmtoon opens up about the inspiration behind the album, describing it as a response to the turbulence and existential questioning she has grappled with over the past few years.

“How do you cope with life-altering change? Maybe you let yourself stew in the mess of emotions it elicits. Maybe you pray to God for the first time. Maybe you make an album about it called ‘liminal space’,” she reflects.

In the wake of the upheaval and introspection triggered by the last few years, “liminal space” explores the feeling of being suspended in a transition that feels endless. The album delves into themes of identity, agency, and the bittersweetness of change. For mxmtoon, the creative process was both a reckoning and a release.

She worked exclusively with an all-female team of producers, engineers, writers, as well as photographers, designers, and visual artists. This collaboration extended to the visual elements of the album, with design work by photographer and visual artist KangHee Kim playing an essential role in reinforcing the themes of change and liminality that mxmtoon grapples with throughout the project. The experience, she says, made confronting her personal struggles through music even more impactful.

As the year draws to a close, mxmtoon will take the stage at the renowned Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City later this month. In spring 2024, she will bring “liminal space” to Europe and the UK, with an 11-date tour starting in Paris on April 15th and wrapping up in Belfast on April 29th.
