Addison Rae’s musical journey continues to evolve with the release of her new single “High Fashion,” and it’s safe to say that we were pleasantly surprised by the direction she’s taking. Over the past few years, Rae has managed to carve out a unique space for herself in the alt-pop scene, and it’s clear her determination to keep experimenting with different sounds has paid off.
There’s a certain charm to Rae’s voice that, while basic in technique, still fits perfectly within the framework of “High Fashion.” Her vocals are light, airy, and a bit sweet—qualities that suit the sensual, stylized nature of the track. However, you can tell she’s working within her limitations here, attempting to create a sultry vibe despite not having the vocal range or versatility of some of her pop peers.
Musically, “High Fashion” carries a moody, almost ominous vibe. The chorus is undoubtedly catchy, but there’s something missing in the way the verses and chorus are structured. They don’t differ enough to elevate the song into a truly dynamic experience. The overall song feels a little static.
Lyrically, “High Fashion” takes an odd turn. The track celebrates a love for fashion, a love for style, but the lyrics come off as a bit cringe-worthy and overly superficial. The obsession with appearance and materialism feels a bit tired and forced, which detracts from what could have been a more compelling and empowering narrative.
As far as her evolution as an artist goes, “High Fashion” solidifies that Rae is well on her way to becoming a pop queen. She’s found her niche in the alt-pop space and doesn’t feel the need to dive into the gritty, experimental side of the genre like so many others. It’s refreshing to hear something that feels polished, even if it’s not a game-changer. That said, the single doesn’t quite reach the highs of her previous hits like “Diet Pepsi” or “Aquamarine,” both of which were stronger in terms of composition and overall impact.
The accompanying music video, directed by Mitch Ryan, is where Rae truly shines. While simple, the video is visually striking and creative. Rae moves through various locations and scenes that seem designed purely to look cool on-screen. Whether she’s savoring a sugar-dusted beignet in a glamorous gown, performing a modern dance covered in sugar in an empty gray room, or channeling a Britney Spears-esque vibe in a bejeweled bra and jeans while writhing in the bayou, the video is a feast for the eyes. There’s even a subtle homage to “The Wizard of Oz” thrown in for good measure.
“High Fashion” is another step in Addison Rae’s musical career. While this track may not top her previous singles, it’s still a step in the right direction, with the promise of greater things to come.
