BLACKPINK’s Rosé steps into the spotlight once again with “Messy,” the latest single from “F1® THE ALBUM,” the official soundtrack to the upcoming racing epic ”F1® THE MOVIE” starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. Billed as an original ballad crafted for the film’s emotional arc, “Messy” arrives as the second release from the album, following Don Toliver and Doja Cat’s sleek but forgettable “Lose My Mind.”
Despite its high-profile rollout and sleek production, “Messy” struggles to leave a meaningful impression. The track leans heavily on synthetic polish, with Rosé’s voice layered under thick autotune and production choices that bury any raw emotional nuance. What should have been a vulnerable, cinematic centerpiece instead comes across as an overly processed attempt to chase chart success.
Lyrically and vocally, the song treads familiar ground though listeners may be hard-pressed to understand the words. Even more disappointing is the melody itself, which fails to stick. It’s not catchy, nor is it haunting, leaving little to hold onto. The composition feels more algorithmically assembled than artistically crafted.
In the end, “Messy” may serve its purpose within the film’s narrative context, but as a standalone single, it underdelivers. The full soundtrack for “F1® THE MOVIE” set to release on June 27 boasts a stacked lineup, with contributions from Ed Sheeran, Tate McRae, Raye, Peggy Gou, and Roddy Ricch.
“F1® THE MOVIE” premieres in theaters July 11.
